Selling in Winnipeg

How to sell your car in Winnipeg

There are really only three ways to sell a vehicle here, and each one suits a different situation. I'm Jack Nott, sales consultant at Nott Autocorp on Waverley Street — here's the straight version of each so you can pick the right one, even if that isn't the one that pays me.

Sell it privately

Best if you have time and patience.

Upside: You keep the full sale price with no fee to anyone.

Downside: Strangers at your door, no-shows, lowball offers, safety inspection and advertising on you, and almost no buyer can finance it — which shrinks your buyer pool a lot.

Trade it in

Best if you're buying something else right away.

Upside: Fastest and simplest — one conversation, one set of paperwork, and the trade value comes off the vehicle you're buying.

Downside: A trade-in number is a wholesale number. It's usually less than what the vehicle would bring from a retail buyer.

Put it on consignment with me

Best if you want retail money without doing the work.

Upside: You keep ownership. We detail it, safety it, advertise it and handle every call, showing and negotiation — and your buyer can finance, which is often what closes the deal.

Downside: There's a $499 intake fee upfront, and our fee on the sale is 10% or $3,500, whichever is greater. It also takes longer than a trade-in.

Before you list it anywhere

  • Find your registration and, if there's a loan, the lender and payout amount.
  • Gather service records — they justify a higher asking price.
  • Get a Manitoba safety inspection done, or price it knowing the buyer will need one.
  • Clean it properly. A detail is the cheapest money you'll ever put into a sale.
  • Know the real market price, not the asking prices you see online.
